Project Date: Fall 2023
Project Type: Group
Project Completed on Semester No: 12
CI Theme of the Term: United Nation Decades on Ecosystem Restoration
Project Description:
Below is the digital story “দেশের অন্যতম চালিকাশক্তি রেমিটেন্স বা প্রবাসী আয়” in the Bengali language, telling the significant role of the immigrant economic force represented by remittances for Bangladesh’s economy according to the points of view of GDP and economic stability. In this project, it describes the contributions that Bangladeshi expatriates from the country working abroad have made. The challenges they are putting up with due to language barriers and exploitation at the hands of other people, and positive effects their families and local communities have enjoyed from the remittances they send. The format includes expert interviews and workers in the visualizations with data about the economic importance of remittances when, for example, discussing issues related to the decline in remittances resulting from the use of informal money transfer methods such as hundi.
Project Justification:
The justification for this project rests on the fact that remittances are very essential in the Bangladesh economy, as a source of significant foreign currency, which supports national development. The focus of the topic allows a digital storytelling of economic benefits of expatriate workers, but also allows focusing on other issues such as unequal wages and disparity in languages. Moreover, this review brings to light the sufferings of migrant workers and accentuates their role in ensuring the stability of a nation’s economy.
